Choosing A Sitter For Newborn Baby

Having a baby involves some big decisions in terms of pregnancy, birthing plans and health care, and once the baby arrives there are even more issues to work out, including child care. Not all babysitters will be experienced in looking after newborn babies, who need a lot of attention and specialist care, but it is very important that there is some kind of alternative child care in place in order to give mums and dads a break from the routine of feeding, changing and endless diapers.

It can be a good idea to get newborn babies used to being held by a few different people, but they will feel unsettled if they are left with strangers for long, so babysitters from your circle of close friends and families are best as that will give your baby a chance to get used to the same people.

If you do not have anyone available from your friends and family then you will need to choose someone who has experience looking after babies (many registered child minders are mums with young children themselves), and will be able to deal with any situations that may arise. It is a good idea to meet the babysitter before your employ them as this will help you see how they interact with your baby, and this will also give you a chance to talk to them about childcare and see if their attitudes reflect your own. You may also want to get some references before employing them as well to put your mind at ease about their level of experience and capability.

If your baby is being breastfed then you can still leave them with a babysitter, as long as you express an adequate supply of milk for them to use for feeding, and you will also need to make sure that your baby is used to taking expressed milk from a bottle. If the baby is on formula then make sure you have adequate supplies of this ready, and leave thorough instructions for the babysitter about how you want the formula prepared.
